Positive: The accommodation provided hotel-level comforts and amenities for self-service prices. We loved the location, the beds and the kitchen facilities. It was an ideal space to stay in with children and we could not believe how spacious and airy the lodges were. The lodges have a very open-plan setup which gave a sense of so much space and lightness. The children loved all the open space and did gymnastics and played endlessly in it. I was able to do washing in the facilities and had everything I needed to hang on the airer provided. The town and surrounding areas are lovely and truly give you a taste of the best of East Cork's offerings. While the grounds could be slightly more accessible to pedestrians, see below, they are breathtaking and incredibly well maintained. The castle is also incredible! The woodland walk was a huge hit and the kids had an absolute ball! There is so much potential for the woodland walk, I realise it's a Coillte site, but it would be great to see the hotel/estate investing in putting in a more in the woods like a fairy or animal trail etc. It's a real asset to the estate and to guests.

Negative: Something that was difficult that is more on us than the accommodation is that Google Maps tried to direct us through private farm land to access the accommodation from the back rather than going through front (public) entrance of the estate. This found us on a flooded single track farm road in the dark having to figure out for to turn around at a locked gate on a very narrow road on the evening of check in. As I say, this is more on us and there were basic instructions included in our check in message. I would just recommend that a line be added stating that Google Maps may lead you astray if you search the location and that access is only possible from the main gates. Another area of possible improvement was to label light switches in the lodges. We really struggled to figure out which switch was for what and were never able to locate the switch for the outdoor light. It may sound over-the-top, but basic labels could easily solve this problem for guests. The last thing which isn't directly linked to the accommodation but more to the estate generally, is that we were disappointed by the lack of pedestrian pavements linking the areas of the estate. The grounds are incredibly beautiful and my kids were very keen to walk from our accommodation to the main hotel to see the woods and farm animals. The problem was that we had to walk in the road or on the wet grass. A lot of lighting has been put in, but sidewalks would be great as it would make the area more accessible to guests, particularly those who may use a wheelchair or stroller.
